Qualification Description

AQF Level : Diploma qualifications are located at level 5 of the Australian Qualifications Framework.

This qualification reflects the role of building professionals who apply knowledge of structural principles, risk and financial management, estimating, preparing and administering building and construction contracts, selecting contractors, overseeing the work and its quality and managing construction work in building projects including residential and commercial with the following limitations:

  • Residential construction limited to National Construction Code Class 1 and 10 buildings to a maximum of 3 storeys.
  • Commercial construction limited to National Construction Code Class 2 to 9 buildings, Type C and B construction.

Occupational titles may include:

  • Builder
  • General Foreperson
  • Building Inspector

The construction industry strongly affirms that training and assessment leading to recognition of skills must be undertaken in a real or very closely simulated workplace environment. To achieve this qualification, the candidate must have access to a live building and construction workplace to meet the requirements detailed in the Assessment Requirements of core unit CPCCBC4008 Supervise communication and administration processes for building and construction projects.

Completion of the general construction induction training program specified by the model Code of Practice for Construction Work is required for any person who is to carry out construction work. Achievement of unit CPCCWHS1001 Prepare to work safely in the construction industry meets this requirement.
Builder licensing varies across States and Territories and requirements additional to the attainment of this qualification may be required.

Course Duration

Full time: over a period of 54 weeks of delivery is inclusive of 4 weeks holiday breaks.
Classroom sessions of 20 hours per week.

To achieve this qualification, the candidate must demonstrate competency in:

  • 3 elective units

Mode of Delivery

Classroom blended, including classroom sessions, guided learning and theory assessments at home and a simulated training environment at a practical workshop.

Workplace site- The Melbourne Institute Of Australia will provide the Builder with a minimum of two (2) weeks’ written notice of any proposed site access, in accordance with the agreed training schedule. The notice will include the proposed date and time, number of students, and the nature and scope of the planned training and assessment activities. The Melbourne Institute Of Australia will liaise with the Builder to confirm site access arrangements and ensure the availability of required resources, equipment, and suitable site conditions to safely support the planned activities.

Admission Requirements

The CPC50220 - Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) allows direct entry into this qualification at the time of publication in training.gov.au. However, the Melbourne Institute of Australia requires candidates to meet its admission requirements prior to enrolling into this qualification to ensure that they have the required skills and knowledge to successfully complete the qualification at this AQF level. This consists of:

2. Evidence that they have studied in English for at least five years in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, United Kingdom or United States

3. Evidence that, within two years of their application date, they have successfully completed in Australia a foundation course or a senior secondary certificate of education or successfully completed substantial components (50% or more units according to the training package) Certificate III or higher-level qualification, from the Australian Qualifications Framework on a student visa.

OR

4. Applicants originating from students visa assessment levels 1 and 2 countries without the required IELTS or equivalent score must undertake the Language, Literacy, Numeracy (LLN) and Digital (D) literacy test. Minimum age of 18 years and above
All international students are required to complete a Pre-Training Review, including an LLND assessment, to identify individual training needs. This process evaluates the learner’s previous education or training, relevant work experience, and the suitability and relevance of the course to their learning goals. This assessment may be conducted via video call or phone call for both onshore and offshore students.
Note: Students must complete CPCWHS1001 – Prepare to work safely in the construction industry (or equivalent) unit with another RTO before any construction site visits.
